B Line Transport – The 99 B-Line is a bus rapid transit service with a bus rapid transit component in Metro Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. It travels along Broadway, a major east-west thoroughfare, connecting the University of British Columbia (UBC) with the Commerce-Broadway station on the SkyTrain system. It is operated by the Coast Mountain Bus Company and sponsored by Translink.

The first and most popular B-Line route in this regional system. Later B-lines were built on the basis of 99 B-lines with articulated buses (which can carry 120 passengers) and frequent bus arrivals. During peak hours on weekdays, the waiting time for buses is 1.5-3 minutes. All buses on this route are manufactured by New Flyer Industries in Winnipeg, Manitoba. On average it takes 42 minutes to complete the journey with tires or half an hour on the last drive at night.

Line 99 B was built to connect UBC to Burnaby’s Lougheed Mall via 10th Avenue, Broadway and the Lougheed Expressway. Under the jurisdiction of BC Transit, it began operations on September 3, 1996, and began operating with several high-floor and full-size buses.

It became clear that regular buses could not keep up with demand, as this route soon became the most popular route in the system. Until September 1998, all journeys used 60-metre low-floor passenger buses decorated in the distinctive B-Line livery.

During peak hours, the B-Line uses the curb lanes designated on Broadway as bus lanes from the Commercial-Broadway station to Arbutus Street.

In its first two years, around 12,000 passengers per day used the route, 30% more than expected. Of these, 20% of passengers went to their destination instead of using public transport. The service should be extended to late nights, Sundays and holidays.

Service began with 10-minute headways between UBC and Broadway Station, 10-20-minute headways between UBC and Brtwood Mall, and 30-minute headways between UBC and Lougheed Mall. Frequency increased as demand increased, but only on the UBC to Broadway station portion, 7.5 minutes earlier. Soon the Lougheed Mall section improved to 15 minutes. Today, the 99 B-Line runs 2 minutes earlier in the morning rush hour and 4.5 minutes earlier in the daily base line.

In the late 1990s, the government of British Columbia approved the construction of a new overground railway line called the Millennium Line. This new line replaces the eastern portion of 99B from Broadway Station to the old terminus at Lougheed Mall. Opened in 2002, the 99 B line terminates at the Th-Broadway station (now the Commercial-Broadway station as a result of the 2009 merger of the Broadway Expo Line and the Millennium Commercial Line station).

Since the majority of passengers on the route are UBC graduates, the introduction of the U-Pass in 2003, a discounted bus pass for university students, further strained the route’s resources. In 2004, a peak-hour B-Line line called the #99 Special was introduced, with a non-stop connection to UBC during the morning rush hour and Broadway Station during the evening rush hour. The line’s “stops” designation was dropped in 2005 to allow for more stops along the corridor, and was phased out entirely in January 2006 in favor of a new route faster than the #99 Special, the #84. It runs from UBC to the new VCC-Clark station. This new route will put some strain on route 99B. In addition, lanes on Broadway were converted to bus lanes during rush hour.

On June 25, 2007, the 99 B-Line became the first line in the TransLink system to allow passengers to board at any of three gates at any stop with valid proof of payment. For this convenience, the bus driver controls the operation of three gates at each station. Passengers paying with cash must enter through the front door. Ticket prices are enforced by security guards in transit. Security officers may board buses at any time to check fares. Passengers without a valid ticket may be removed from the bus or fined.

With the renaming of the remaining B-Line routes to RapidBus in January 2020, it was decided to keep the 99 B line intact without being included in the renaming, as the Millennium Line Broadway extension will replace the eastern section. 99 B-line. The extension will include 6 stations running from VCC-Clark Station to Arbutus Street where short service will operate from the new bus loop. As a result of these changes, the B 99 line remained the only B line still in operation.

Before Skytrain’s Millennium Line opened, 99 B Lines served these stops in addition to the stops listed above. TSA provided collection and transaction services to Transport for New South Wales (TfNSW) during the tender for the B-Line Consultancy Programme. This meant revamping bus services between the Northern Beaches and Sydney CBD. The $234 million development will provide double-decker bus services, updated bus stops, new parking and roadworks to improve traffic flow.

The tendering process for the project involved scope development and consolidation, staggered works to minimize impact on the road network. Bids were assessed against a wide range of criteria to ensure that the preferred option was the best solution for TfNSW in terms of delivery and value for money. The supply contract was signed in December 2016.
