With Matchday 5 in the books, 11 teams have booked their places in the Champions League last 16 as places in the last 16 dwindle. Some of them are familiar faces, others are slightly unexpected. Porto, LiverpoolBayern Munich, Real Madrid, Club Brugge, NaplesChelsea, Borussia Dortmund, PSG, Benficaand City of Manchester they’ve booked their places, but what do the other teams have to do to get into matchday 6?

First of all, let’s take a look at the tiebreakers if a team finishes level on points. Things are a little different from the general league game. The first tiebreaker is the points in head-to-head matches between tied teams. If the tied teams are still equal on their head-to-head points, then it goes to the teams’ head-to-head goal difference. Finally, the advantage would go to the team that has scored the most goals. An example is what we have seen Barcelona and Inter Milan. Inter beat Barca 1-0 at home and then drew 3-3 at home, giving the Italian club four points in front with Barca taking just one from the tie. This means that if they finish level on points, Inter will go through.

If multiple teams are tied after going through all previous tiebreakers, then goal difference in all group matches comes into play. Next are goals scored in all group stage matches, away goals in all group matches, wins in all group matches and then away wins in all group matches. If it still doesn’t, we get to the disciplinary points for each team and the UEFA club coefficient.
