China tops U.S. for first time in this ranking of world’s ‘best’ universities

China has surpassed the US in terms of the world’s best universities.

Among the 2,000 schools from more than 90 countries ranked by US News & World Report, 338 Chinese universities made the list, and 280 were American universities. It is the first time that China has surpassed the US.

The results were reported in the media network’s “Rankings of the World’s Best Universities” released on Tuesday. The US and China are followed by Japan (105 universities), UK (92) and India (81).

The media started ranking in 2014 when many universities began competing for students as well as faculty and research investments. The ranking is based on several parameters, including research reputation, publications, conferences and citations. Student grades and individual programs are not included.

Although China outscores the US by 58 points, the majority of US universities, including eight out of 10, are in the top half, the report said.

The report added four new topics in 43 steps: artificial intelligence; Educational and educational research; Meteorology and Atmospheric Science; and water resources. “These are hot fields right now and there’s a lot of interest at various levels,” Robert Morse, chief data strategist at US News, told MarketWatch in an email.

Among the top 10 schools for AI, five schools were from mainland China; Carnegie Mellon of the US also ranked high.

Public health concerns and travel restrictions related to the pandemic have partly led to a sharp drop in numbers over the past two years, but rising tensions between the two countries have pushed Chinese students to seek alternatives outside of China and the US. Options.

Artificial intelligence is one of the few areas that both the US and China have as a strategic national priority. The Biden administration has signed the National AI Initiative Act of 2020 into law in 2021, aiming to increase US leadership in the field.
